Fundamentals in Enterprise Content Management: Moving Towards a Unified
Approach
By Kevin Nichols, Senior Consultant, User Experience, Molecular
Throughout large and small-scale organizations, Enterprise Content
Management (ECM) is quickly becoming the catch phrase to describe the ultimate
solution that solves any and all content issues. Whereas a robust ECM solution
addresses an organization's content needs, to view those needs and respective
solutions as one-dimensional or easy-fixes can offer expensive and often
undesirable results. ECM is not an easy or one-time solution to long-term and
organizationally-wide content issues. It is a starting point to address content
needs, and if properly designed, implemented and maintained over time, an ECM
solution can optimize and streamline content, saving an organization time and
money, and ensuring that the content itself preserves brand identity and
organizational content standards.
This paper provides a view of the systems, processes and functionality that
comprise ECM and highlights how organizations can benefit from a robust ECM
solution. It also examines best practices in methodology, and posits a process
to use in planning and implementing an ECM strategy.
